I had an oyster!

I am a person who likes to try out new things so when I saw oysters at Stellenbosch Slow Market (Food Market) I knew I had to give it a taste!

I bought one, my family was perturbed; they thought I was completely out of my mind! At first sight, oysters do not look appetizing at all which I think we can all agree. I have always viewed them as just expensive and luxurious food to have with champagne. So I got my oyster, they were about R20 each at the time – and of course I was shocked at this price! When I drew the oyster towards my mouth I could smell the strong sea smell and I was put off immediately but it was too late to chicken out, I’m not a quitter plus there were already so many eyes on me. I added some Tabasco green pepper sauce and a squeeze of lemon juice. Using a tiny fork the vendor detached the oyster from the shell for me and so I could have the oyster. Reluctantly I held the shell up to my lip and slurped the oyster into my mouth. It was slimy and weird on my tongue. It tasted like metal and salt water. I did not even chew it, I did not even know I was supposed to chew it so down my throat it went and that was it.

So will I ever have oysters again? I might, but I am not in a hurry to have another one anytime soon. This was actually a few years ago and I have not had one since. However oysters come packed with essential nutrients and minerals, these include Vitamins A, E, C and B12, iron, calcium, zinc and selenium. They are known to help with blood circulation and they are said to be a great aphrodisiac among many other benefits. Therefore, if nothing else makes you want to try out oysters at least their nutritional and health benefits can be reason enough!
